Buying a Timeshare. That's right! You can just skip the high pressure sales presentation! I know. Timeshare companies, especially the one I recommend, should be paying me more than they pay their top sales performer for this! It doesn't matter, though. The point is to "pay it forward."
In an ideal world, developers would smarten up and figure out a more respectful and sophisticated way to sell their "wares."
In an ideal world, when buying a timeshare you could read the information on this site, for instance, contact the developer and process the purchase without any hoopla.
In an ideal world, developers wouldn't be spending a reported 50% of the purchase price on silly, insulting, high pressure sales presentations, and pass those savings on to you (not leaving out the developer added value "goodies," of course!)
Because of developers' chosen high pressure sales approach, as well as some real dishonest shenanigans practiced by a few when you are buying a timeshare, there is so much negative information out there.
The real backlash comes in the form of "distressed" resales, creating a saturated market of dissatisfied, scared owners trying to dump their timeshares. Owners who don't really understand how to USE their timeshare, or who have not really made a priority commitment to vacationing period, join the rest, and are trying to dump their timeshare as well.
In an ideal world, no one would ever be buying a timeshare unless it met my Buy Right Rules In an ideal world, we would USE it at least once every year, building a family tradition of vacationing in a home away from home, and then pass it on to our children and our children's children to enjoy.
There would be NO resale if timeshare were being marketed and used appropriately. That's where I aim to go here. I'll tell you right up front you can currently find timeshare on the resale market for less than 50% of what you would pay the developer.
Do I recommend you buy resale instead? I just couldn't make that blanket recommendation and sleep at night! I can only tell you what I would or wouldn't do.
Personally, while I don't like the developer's high pressure approach and I certainly don't like paying 50% extra for it (!), the prospect of not having a contract directly with the developer for accountability, as well as not receiving the added value package, and added services would keep me from buying resale. See Timeshare Retail vs Resale. I personally would only consider buying resale if I was buying additional time at a timeshare company I already own and trust, and if I could purchase that additional time from someone I know and trust.
I do hope that this site can be part of changing the way it is, but for now this is the way it is. I can show you how to skip the high pressure sales presentation, I cannot (yet) say that the developer is going to pass the marketing dollars they save on to you, but I'm working on it!
My mission, remember, is to help you take a first class dirt cheap vacation for the rest of your life. My mission is to help you change your life like it changed ours! That means more than money. That means literally your lifetime, plus many generations into the future, of knowing firsthand what's really important in life -- creating memories together.
If that sounds too altruistic, how about this: you and I are raising the leaders of tomorrow. I do have a vested interest in your children getting your undivided attention on a vacation every year that takes them to new places and teaches them more than they'll ever learn in school.
Okay, you got me! It's completely selfish! When I'm an old woman wearing purple hats that don't suit me, eating pickles, sausage and chocolate cake all week because I can, I'll be looking into the eyes of your children who got to go on vacation with you, trusting them to keep me safe, and treat me with respect.
So make yourself a cup of peppermint tea and then let's get down to the ins and outs of buying a timeshare. Isn't this exciting? I can't wait until you see the best one -- it's brilliant!
