Lodging Facts: Hotels Take the Lion's Share of Your Vacation Budget

Lodging costs

Take a look at these Lodging Facts from AAA and other travel experts. Hotels eat up 60-70%+ of your vacation budget! Hospitality Trends reports that, according to a Visa survey, Americans plan to spend an average of $1654 on their summer vacations (15% are staying home and 4% plan to spend over $5000). AAA states that lodging rates across America average $152 per night, up nearly 7.9% from last year. Let's do the math:

$152 hotel per night

x 7 nights

=$1064 Total Lodging

$1654 average vacation budget

-$1064 total lodging

=$590 left for transportation, food and activities

Wow! Do you know how a family of three or four can cover the rest of their vacation with $590? Me either! These lodging facts tell it all! If you can figure out how to get there, I don't know what you're going to eat and hope you like hotel TV, because you won't be going on any dolphin safari! That's why my children and I were in the 15% that just weren't going!

Yet the hotel industry had another record year of profits! Hospitality Trends reports that, according to Smith Travel Research, 2006 was another record-breaking year netting hotels $26.6 billion in profits. Hmmm...that's a lot of money that' is a 100% loss out of my pocket! ...And what's the deal with the 7.9% inflation over last year? The whole thing sounds INFLATED to me!
